Wednesday Wins!: Sunday Edition

Sorry for the delay. I had a very busy, and somewhat eventful week. I am so happy to be feeling normal again. I think the whole extreme exhaustion I was feeling before I got sick was the pre-cursor to the death flu.

Anyway, here are my wins for this week.

1) Juicing. This one really excites me. My friend Gabe suggested I watch a documentary called, Sick, Fat & Nearly Dead when I felt like I was dying. The film is eye-opening to say the least. We know that fruits and veggies are good for us. What we take for granted is how much our immune system relies on more than just one apple a day (the doctor who said just one was enough to keep him away was a lying SOB). The film is really about cleaning your system out by juicing for 10 days (or longer), aka “fasting.” It’s not really a fast, as your body is taking in more nutrients than it probably ever has before. I want to tell you everything that happened in the film, but I really want everyone to watch it, so no spoilers from me. Let’s just say it’s very inspirational.

Anyway, I’ve had a nice juicer since I got married. One of my old work colleagues bought us one for our wedding. And I’d used it once. Last weekend, I marched my butt down to the farmer’s market and bought a s-ton of fruits and veggies for $20. I proceeded to juice my heart out, and it lasted me until Wednesday. Not only have I felt a lot better all week, I’ve had more energy (weird feeling for me), and I’ve been happier. Just by feeding my body pounds of natural nutrients for a few days. Also, my skin has been less dry. I’ve had a dry patch of dry skin on my forehead and left elbow that I am always struggling with. This week? The elbow is as soft as a baby’s bottom, and my forehead is clearing up. Amazing, huh?

What did I juice? For the veggies, I mixed carrots, kale, cucumber, celery, apples, lemon, and ginger (this is called Mean Green by one of the guys in the movie). The fruit juice, I did strawberries, blueberries, apples, ginger, lemon, and carrots. I probably won’t use strawberries again. It makes the juice a little too pulpy for my taste.

Today, I took the remaining carrots, apples, a pear, handful of blueberries, and a little ginger, and decided to make Chris and I lunch.

It tasted really good! And I did the math; in these two glasses, there is 660% your recommended Vitamin A intake, and 100% of your recommended Vitamin C intake. Not to mention all the other antioxidants  found on all of these fruits and vegetables. Not too shabby, eh?

This is not as nutrient-rich as the Mean Green I was making last week, but it’s definitely better than nothing.

So for anyone looking for a immune system boost, I’d recommend just juicing your fruits and veggies once or twice a week. It makes a huge difference.

I am no expert on this crap, so if you decide to do a fast or you have other health conditions, talk to your doctor. I don’t want to get sued. And watch Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. OK?

I had a couple more I was going to post today, but I just decided to wait until Wednesday.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend! I am excited to for this next week. I have a feeling it will be a good one.
